MALDIVES
POPULATION

The Maldivian population is relatively small, with just over half a million people inhabiting the island chain. This translates to uncrowded beaches and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for unwinding. The Maldivian people, known as Dhivehis, are renowned for their warm hospitality. Their culture is steeped in rich traditions and influenced by Sri Lanka, India, and Arabia. Many Dhivehis work in tourism, and their friendly smiles and genuine service contribute significantly to the Maldives’ reputation as a paradise for travelers.

Learning a few basic Dhivehi phrases like “aapige genvaarun” (thank you) goes a long way in connecting with the locals and enriching your experience. The Dhivehis’ love for their unique culture and island home is contagious, making you feel welcome and eager to explore the beauty of the Maldives.

MALDIVES
CURRENCY

The official currency of the Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). It’s divided into 100 laari, but you’ll likely encounter notes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 500 rufiyaa. While Rufiyaa is the official tender, US Dollars are widely accepted throughout the country, especially in tourist areas like resorts and shops. Many establishments even display prices in both USD and Rufiyaa.

Since the Rufiyaa is considered a “closed” currency, it’s difficult to exchange it outside the Maldives. Exchanging South African Rand (ZAR) for Rufiyaa is likely not possible before your trip. Your best options are to bring USD or exchange your Rand for USD in South Africa before departure. Upon arrival, you can exchange USD for Rufiyaa at the airport or local currency exchange offices.

For most transactions, particularly at resorts, credit cards are widely accepted. However, carrying some Rufiyaa for smaller purchases, souvenirs at local shops, or tipping service providers can be helpful. ATMs are scarce outside of the capital city, Malé, so relying solely on credit cards might be risky in remote locations. Remember to check with your bank about any international transaction fees associated with using your credit card abroad.
